Getting started with tools for webmasters: fixing of 404 errors

If you write the layers change, improve your bowling score, find a job in the industry of the journey or how do you get images on your cell phone, I think it's a universal truth that, if you write online, you want search engine results placement better.

Most likely, you have installed some SEO plugins that promise to improve your results and they could even work, but if your site has been up to some time, it is likely that things began to break up the scenes and affect your results without you ever being notified. A frightening prospect, really, and if it is quite spectacular, you can begin to really sink down to the search results without any other explanation.

That is why Google has its Webmaster tools and while they are primarily designed for people who have a full on their website, even control, it may be useful if you are on wordpress.com, blogger.com or typepad.com. in fact, you must be a blogger to find useful: problems of injure any site, regardless of its structure.

The first thing you have to do with the Google Webmaster Tools is to verify that the site you want to analyze your own. This is done usually by adding a special line of the HTML head of your home page, as I detail here.

If you cannot change your header, there are alternatives that offers Google, but if you have zero rights of administration on the site, you may well be out of luck. If so, check with your host to see if it offers alternative administration tools that allow you to know broken links, etc..

Once you have verified your site owner, you will see on the left side that the major axes are Site configuration, your web site, + 1 Metrics, Diagnostics and labs. Below, there is little help that highlights really what you can glean tools: Crawl errors, search queries, links to your site and Sitemaps. All good things.

There is good analytical data which seems to be a bit of overlap with what you can get from Google Analytics (or your favorite analytic package) if it is not your particular Cup of tea and sometimes it reveals things that perhaps you didn't know, as "sexy girls" are the search for # 1 for people who get my attachment parenting Blog. Oops. Not that I write on my site or something, I want that people is working when they arrive on my blog.

At the heart of the tools Webmaster, however, are diagnostic tests because it is the main way that we can learn spider search that Google is broken on the site. Go to diagnostic tools, and it decomposes further to malware, Crawl errors, Crawl stats, Fetch as Googlebot and HTML suggestions.

All good things, but let's go Crawl errors because it offers great bang for your proverbial buck.

Not too bad. This blog has hundreds of pages, but I am seeing only 36 of the hated 404 not found errors. Look closely and you'll see that the format is bad link, error encountered, related to and date of detected. The real value is that if you click on the link that shows how many pages have a link to the wrong URL, it'll show exactly what pages need to be fixed on your site and, sometimes, on other sites too. The first link is to another site, called bubhub.com.au, but all other pages that have a link to this bad URL are on my own site. It is something that I can correct immediately.

You can see that we've received just on the tip of the iceberg, with Google's Webmaster Tools. It is deep, it's complicated, but even if just, you punch and look at the 404 errors generated for your own blog and the greatest possible number of correction, you will be pleased to see how improving your ranking and, perhaps most importantly, you will be pleased to know that you have improved just your readers experience. And finally, there is nothing more important that happy readers, are there?
