Once your blog has more than a few posts on it, chances are, it will become increasingly difficult to find old content.
Who cares? It is old!
But not all messages are not relevant after a given date. Some posts are timeless. Read in a year or two today, and they will be still relevant. You can also read the posts that are completely obsolete, just for fun.
Categories are all well to find positions. But categories depend on Blogger organize their positions significantly logical for readers as much as it is logical for them. Still, this becomes more difficult with time. You will end up by with hundreds of categories, or a few categories with hundreds of posts in each. None is easy to go well.
Archives may be useful too, if you want to go and read the blog from the beginning. Comics can be quite fun to read in this way. But at least it makes sense as a ticket on the design and layout are found under may 2011 (it is illogical in all), it helps much either.
This is where the search box.
Research is good for finding ways positions, that you have never dreamed.

So, to summarize. You need a box to search your blog. Why? Because it helps people find your messages!
