In March 2010, in my second year at Elon University, I started a blog called the fan Jets of Jersey as a way to exercise my passion for professional football. Originally, what started as a hobby has become much more that it, because I constantly looked to further promote my blog and slowly begins to monetize the site.
In January 2011, I launched my second blog, BROcrastinator.com in the hope of capturing a large piece of male college demographic. While I had varying degrees of success and made a few dollars along the way, I learned a lot on the blogosphere. Balancing the workload of the College and the maintenance of a full time blog is hard to do something, and it certainly has its advantages and pit-falls. Here, according to yours truly.
The College is a time where you were supposed to learn everything you need to adequately survive in the real world. As a marketing student, I learned my fair share of the terms, equations, and statistics in College, but only the blogs have given me the experience of the real world that will help me to succeed in the business world.
In a year and a half blogs past, I have joined various networks of affiliation, spoken with a ton of potential advertisers, hired/printed/kept bloggers, has worked with various partner sites and opportunities created for myself on the way business which. I have never made much money, but it was enough to offset the costs of up-keep on my blogs and even to splurge on some elements as new golf clubs.
If you are applying for an internship in the summer, the grad school or a job full time, to include your blog in your curriculum vitae. When I was applying for an internship in sports marketing, my experience as a blogger fan Jets of Jersey was one of the key factors that generated interest of the employer.
Many people said that they are interested in a subject or experience something, but few people have the dedication to maintain and run an effective blog. If do you, do not be ashamed, write about it in your curriculum vitae and it could help you to win you have fought for the position.
Never in a million years ago when I started blogging never me my articles have cells on Sports Illustrated or talking on the New York Times's Web site. It really gives you a feeling of accomplishment when you work fort and someone notice by featuring your work.
As a blogger who gets only around 400 views per day, sometimes I get discouraged at the reading of the successes of other bloggers who reach a million "fast and easy" views of the day to the next. Even though I have never had a post viral or even broken 1,000 views a day, he you feel good when someone recognizes your work.
While I originally started a blog because I had free time at the College, I quickly realized the amount of free time, that I had was not enough to make my blogs where I wanted to go there. There are points in time where I've was too extended out, writing for too many blogs, focusing on too many social media sites, speak in too many forums. You only have so many hours a day, and I learned that you must spend wisely on what works well for you.
At one point, I wrote for a prestigious New York Jets in addition to my own blog. While I was first honored by the opportunity and experience, I didn't have enough time to put full effort in both. Something had to give, and as it pained me, the prestigious blog was not as important to me as my college and my own blog notes.
As many of you, one of the reasons why I started to blog was because of the chance to win money. I was hoping never to much, just enough for some spending cash on weekends. However, there are times when I started to believe the saying, "we need to spend money to make money." Well, as I just said that you, I'm cash strapped college kid with a few dollars to spare here and there, but nothing significant. It is not the easiest in the world to launch a site good looking with about $100, while others are spending thousands.
I am aware that my blogs are not the prettiest thing that your eye has ever known, but I did my best with money and technology skills, that I had. While some older bloggers may have spare cash to reduce $ 10,000 on a nice looking site, College bloggers may have even a $50 bonus theme. I do not say you need money to build a good looking and successful blog, but this is certainly not evil.
When blogging to College, or on any constraint of time, it is important to make sure that you know your priorities. While I place the school blogs work, when I am not studying, use this time to move my blog. In fact, I spend much less time to do school work and then I did before blogging, because I know that I have additional work to take care of when I finished. The most difficult moments may occur during the mi-termes and final exams when the stress of several classes of all crush them both. Sometimes, you just have to put your blog on hold for a week objectives, even if your visits and page views to suffer.
With regard to the lack of money have many bloggers, I have learned to take advantage of what you have. I started with a free WordPress theme and then settled on a theme of thesis with skin premium as my Advanced blogs. By reinvesting almost any money earned my sites, I was able to improve the design and still spend a little money on advertising. While I wish sometimes that I have had thousands of dollars to spend on my blogs, the reality is that I do. However, with a few smart money management and creativity a little, you can stretch your dollar and take a long way.
Need, these are some of my main advantages and disadvantages for college blogger. I hope that I make the light on the subject, especially for you, the students of the College there looking to potentially start a blog. It is hard to do something, but it is certainly worth. I found in blogs that you get only in so far that you put, but if you put a ton of effort, you can find huge rewards.
